À la fin du XVIIe siècle, l'Europe se livre à une véritable chasse aux sorcières. En Angleterre, un juge sadique et un peu trop zélé arrête bon nombre de femmes innocentes qu'il fait accuser "d’adoratrice du diable", les rend responsables d'actes de sorcellerie sans preuves évidentes et les brûlent publiquement. Marie vient de perdre sa sœur dans ces atroces conditions : elle est bien décidée à venger sa mémoire.
