SYNOPSIS
A meteor roc crashes near a girl school in Boston. Shortly after that, people begin to disappear, all of them having a link whatsoever with one of the teachers named Ashley. However, something much more scaring roams in the basements of the school...REVIEW
Right from the beginning of the credits, we're totally immerged into the story as we find ourselves in space. Yes, it deals with an extra-terrestrial story though we don't know it at once... but we very soon discover it.The story is very much of a classic one but much efficient: an alien comes to Earth and, suddenly, humans begin to disappear...
First, the movie holds the road thanks to the way the actors act which is convincing. In spite of the great number of characters in the very beginning of the movie, some characters stand out of the lot and are, as we guess, the heroes of this long running film.
Concerning the alien, I find it not badly done for a small budget movie. It's an impressive monster be it because it seems huge or because of the way it looks: it gave me the impression to be a mix between the creatures in "ALIEN" and the one of "THE CREATURE OF THE BLACK LAGOON". All around him, there's a blue/ green light halo and a thick cloud of smoke which intensify the mystery about it.
Except for the halo around the extra-terrestrial, the movie is quite dark, the lights amplifying larges spaces of shadows, convenient not only for a “hide-and-seek” between the monsters and the humans but also to much unexpected appearances of the alien.
The noises do much about the atmosphere of the film. Indeed, the creature is hardly seen as a whole but its grunts can be heard all the movie long. Additionally, it seems to shelter in a kind of sewer and water noises can also be heard often. To match with all that, the music stresses brilliantly the tense atmosphere of the hunt.
The director plays very well with all the fears that all human beings can have when confronted to an alien: the destruction of the human race, mind control, the use of human bodies to reproduce itself...
It's more of a classic horror movie than of a gory one. The special effects, the monter excepted, are very few and not very bloody. It's one of the only reproaches that can be made about this movie with the total lack of a French track or French subtitles.
